Earbuds - Best Practice and Your Ear Health

Earbuds are an excellent tool for experiencing a great listening environment while using your favorite portable media device. With the right set, earbuds can give you a near studio quality sound without the hassle and conspicuousness of a huge set of traditional earphones. Having high quality, balanced sound is very important for a good listening experience, but maintaining good hearing is infinitely more important in the long run.

Here are some good tips to avoid damaging your inner ear material so you can keep on listening to your favorite music, videos, and games.

Lower the volume on your portable media device. It might take some getting used to, but this simple fix goes a long way in protecting your overall hearing ability.
If you have a volume limiter on your device, keep it activated. This way when those higher volume sounds start to hit your eardrums won't take a beating.

Take periodic breaks. Just like your eyes while viewing a computer screen over long periods of work, your ears can become fatigued. Give yourself a five-minute break for every hour of listening.

Use your earbuds as a listening device, not as a method for blocking out the rest of your environment. This might be tempting, but earbuds are made for listening to sound, not for blocking it out. So if your using your earbuds to block out your environment, the tendency is to blast the volume way up. This is most definitely damaging to your delicate inner ear structures.

Get yourself a good set of sound isolating or noise-canceling earbuds. If your intent is to block out exterior noises, then using this type of earbud is much easier on your ears. You can achieve the same perception of volume as that of a regular set, but without the actual high volume settings. This way you can listen to music at what feels like high volume without actually damaging those invaluable ears of yours.
So be kind to your ears. If you want to go on enjoying your favorite music, videos, and games, why would you want to destroy one of the most important organs of your body responsible for providing you with that experience? Take care of those ears and be sure to keep in mind these best practices and others you may pick up along the way to protect your ear health.
